I didn't
know that this box variation existed until just a couple of years
ago. Probably released in 1968, the late issue figure boxes featured
a new construction method for the box lids. Instead of printing
paper lithographs and adhering them to plain cardboard lids, Hasbro
actually printed the lid art onto the cardboard itself, which was
then folded into the lid shape. Hasbro did not produce this box
style for very long and hence this box variation is very rare and
hard to come by.
This
example comes mint in box with narrow Navy manual, GI Joe club folder,
Removal of Boots instructions, rank insignia and ID ribbons. The
figure is a late issue soft head patent figure (Adventurer). He
is wearing a single pocket, three button, two snap, work shirt tagged
GI Joe R Hasbro Japan, dungarees tagged GI Joe R Hasbro Japan that
have a piece of paper sewn into the seam right behind the tag. The
uniform is mint, unplayed with and factory stiff. He is also wearing
short black boots. Unfortunately, the box has sustained some damage.
The lid has some creasing on the front and the box bottom, which
is an interesting bluish green color, had several splits when I
received the set. Overall, a really rare variation of the Action
Sailor.
